Best-selling author Hope Edelman is returning to lead a three day workshop at the Iowa Writers' House.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Call them Era and Setting. Or When and Where. Every narrative-fiction and nonfiction—is grounded in a specific time and place. This weekend workshop will help writers develop both in their prose. We'll examine how stories unfold as they do precisely because of where and when they occur.
Through a series of short exercises, we'll evoke a sense of place in your story (using visual description, sounds, tastes, textures, environment) and also to capture a specific moment in time, whether it's the mid Seventies, the late 1990s, or last week (using product names, songs, TV shows, stores, clothing). If you know where and when your story takes place, excellent. You're halfway there. If you don't, this workshop will help you decide.
