ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

What exactly is a literary magazine, what is their role in the literary world, and how can you get published in one? In this session, the managing editor of The Iowa Review will share inside stories of her sixteen years with one of the country’s most distinguished literary magazines. You’ll become familiar not only with TIR but also a number of other top literary magazines and receive personalized advice on where to send your work. Learn the ins and outs of a slush pile, what Sumittable can do for you, the ethics of literary fees and contests, and the spoken and unspoken rules of the editor-writer relationship.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Lynne Nugent has been managing editor of The Iowa Review since 2003. Her personal essays have appeared in the North American Review, Brevity, the New York Times, Full Grown People, Mutha Magazine, Hippocampus Magazine, and elsewhere. Her essay “The Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card” was named a Notable Essay in Best American Essays 2016, and her essay “My Grief Is a Student of the Humanities” was runner-up for Mid-American Review’s Fineline prize.

INSTRUCTOR INSPIRATION STATEMENT

As I child, I wondered if there was any possible profession in which I would be paid to read. “No,” everyone said. And yet, I have been lucky enough to find myself in just such a career. I get to indulge my love of words and of language on a daily basis—as well as navigate deadlines, puzzle over budgets, and collaborate with a team. Ever the multitasker, I am also raising small children. In my “free time,” I write creative nonfiction.
